letter from Editor-in-Chief, Kitty Liu:
It’s my pleasure to present to you another issue of U-Lingua! Issue 10 dives into a diverse range of topics. The News section presents two articles about linguistics in recent affairs – lip reading at the Euros, and recent British legislation on British Sign Language – and two articles about recent research – pragmatic acquisition in children, and an omni-linguistic framework for studying linguistic and non-linguistic behaviour. The articles in the Voices section all touch on the theme of identity, from the emergence of a General Northern accent, to gender presentation in grammatically gendered languages, to oppression and violence based on linguistic identity. There are also two puzzles in this issue, one of which written at the ULAB Puzzles Workshop this August. Happy reading, and I really hope you enjoy Issue 10 as much as I did!
Thank you for reading and supporting us here on Substack. We are experimenting with making articles individual sharable posts and releasing them incrementally; feedback so far has been positive.
We are looking for someone to make/source graphics and images that can be embedded in the Substack articles. We would also still like to make magazines in the style of Issues 1-9, especially so we can publish more print editions of U-Lingua, so we are also looking for someone to lay out the Substack articles we publish. If you are interested in one or both of these jobs, let us know at ulinguamagazine@gmail.com!
As ever, please also get in touch if you’d like to write for us, send us puzzles, or just say hi!
