Your Quarterly ULAB Updates: Autumn 2022
Issue 10: letters from the National Vice Chair on what ULAB has been up to, and from the Local Chair on the 2023 ULAB conference
letter from Nichole Chan, National Vice Chair of ULAB 2022-23:
As always, we at ULAB have been hard at work bringing you new events and opportunities. In August, we had our first puzzle writing workshop by Dr. Pavel Iosad and Prof. Graeme Trousdale from the University of Edinburgh, which ended with the first ULAB games night, organised by our Puzzles section editors, Cliodhna Hughes and Kazune Sato. Our team over at JoULAB also did an amazing job in bringing you the 2022 conference proceedings, head on over to the ULAB website if you’re interested in what research has been presented at the 2022 conference!
This year, we’ve initiated a research buddy scheme for like-minded linguists around the world to work on research projects together. We hope that these research buddy groups will bring out new topics and discoveries in the linguistics world! Apart from this exciting new buddy scheme, we’ve relaunched our memberships this year. If you’re interested, head onto our website and check them out – we’ve got our members new perks this year, but please remember that ULAB will remain accessible to everyone regardless of membership.
In other news, we elected a new accessibility officer, Romany Amber, who is also U-Lingua’s Section Editor for News! We’ve also recruited new institutional representatives from the University of Warwick and Newcastle University. If you don’t see an institutional representative from your institution and would love to become one, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’d love to have you on board!
As the new academic year is starting in the UK, we look forward to welcoming everyone back and hopefully see you all at our events. Stay tuned!
letter from Jade Pathak, Local Chair of ULAB 2022-23:
UPDATE ON THE 2023 ULAB CONFERENCE!
We’re hard at work here at the University of Manchester organising the conference for this academic year. The dates are confirmed to be in mid April, during the Easter holidays. The Head of Department at UoM and the Undergraduate Experience Lead are on board and supportive, helping us secure venues and funding and our Student Union theatre is already booked for our AGM and socials! Me and Santiago (local vice chair), along with UoM Lingsoc, have been promoting ULAB at freshers’ fairs, welcome talks, lectures and seminars and even a ULAB themed pizza evening. We're in the very final stages of allocating roles to our subcommittee so look out for their profiles coming soon! We're also reaching out to Manchester Metropolitan and Salford University to get them on board to help organise a conference that truly encapsulates the spirit of Manchester. We look forward to giving you more updates soon and hope you're as excited as we are about the conference next Spring!
